Healthwatch Wandsworth – Celebrating ten years of people speaking up to make care better

06/04/2023 by Comms Team

Local health and care champion, Healthwatch Wandsworth, which is delivered by WCA, marks the difference the public have made to improve NHS and social care services.

In 2013, Healthwatch Wandsworth was launched with one simple aim, to make sure NHS leaders and other decision-makers hear the care experiences of people in Wandsworth and use your feedback to improve support. Healthwatch Wandsworth also helps people to find reliable and trustworthy information and advice.

Over the last decade, over 10,000 stories have been shared by people in Wandsworth, good and bad, with Healthwatch Wandsworth. They’ve been telling us what’s working and what isn’t regarding health and social care. With the help of local people, Healthwatch Wandsworth has been able to help improve health and social care services in Wandsworth.

To mark this important milestone, we are celebrating the contribution of our Healthwatch Heroes – our volunteers, the members of the public who have spoken up about their care and the health and social care professionals who have acted on this feedback.

The difference people in Wandsworth have made

The evidence provided by local people’s experiences has helped improve NHS and social care services nationally and locally.

Last year the Healthwatch network supported more than two million people to have their say on care and get the right advice.

Here are just some of the ways people helped make a difference in 2021-22:

  • Healthwatch research exploring vaccine confidence with people from different backgrounds provided vital lessons for public health campaigns.
  • Public feedback helped highlight the negative impact poor NHS admin can have and recommended five principles for services to improve people’s experiences.
  • The Government updated national hospital discharge guidance to put patient safety first, thanks to the views of patients and carers.
  • NHS England announced improvements to non-emergency patient transport services thanks to public feedback.
  • After Healthwatch and other organisations called for an urgent response to hospital waiting lists, and better interim communication and support, the NHS set out a recovery plan to address the backlog.
  • Healthwatch uncovered that only a third of NHS Trusts fully comply with their duty to help patients with sensory impairments and learning disabilities, which has helped lead to a national review of the Accessible Information Standard.

More people urged to get involved

Commenting on the anniversary, Stephen Hickey, chair of Healthwatch Wandsworth said:

“Over the last ten years, we’ve been able to help improve health and social care services for people in Wandsworth. But nothing would have changed if local people had not spoken up about their care and services had not listened. So thank you to all our volunteers, and everyone else who has played their part.

“However, we can’t stop here. With NHS and social care services facing such big challenges, your feedback is more critical than ever. By sharing your experience, you can help professionals to put themselves in your shoes, to understand your reality and the issues that need tackling to improve care.

“So next time you use a health or care service, take a moment to share your experience. It won’t take long and could make a real difference in making care better for you and your community.”

Be a Healthwatch Hero and have your say today.

The Big Help Out Initiative – letter from the Mayor of Wandsworth

05/04/2023 by Comms Team

Sector Colleague,

King Charles III this week launched The Big Help Out Initiative’ aimed at promoting volunteering and empowering people to ‘Help Out’. The launch is to commemorate The King’s coronation in May, and I am adding my voice in support of the initiative. Part of what makes the United Kingdom great is that we can find examples in every corner of the nation where volunteers supporting mutual aid community groups, charities and neighbourhoods are making a difference locally, nationally, and internationally.

Here in Wandsworth, we have always been proud of our Voluntary Sector, and over my time as mayor, I have seen first-hand the difference that volunteers are making. It has been my honour and great pleasure to engage with our local groups and to meet the volunteers who so selflessly give of their time and efforts in making a difference in our community.

May I encourage you to host a thank you/recruitment event in celebration of your volunteers.

If you would like me or my Deputy to come along and participate in your take on The Big Help Out Initiative and to say thank you to your volunteers, please get in touch with my office at Mayors.Office@wandsworth.gov.uk. We certainly look forward to an opportunity to celebrate your volunteers and to promote the difference they make.

Thank you for the work you and your volunteers do!

Mayor of Wandsworth,
Councillor Jeremy Ambache

BATCA Community Awards celebration 16th March. Three cheers for our heroes!

23/03/2023 by Comms Team

What a night we had! Over 150 people came together to celebrate our heroes on a night overflowing with joy and goodwill. Awards were presented to seven individuals and teams, while all those nominated received certificates of commendation.

All are heroes! Their commitment and dedication, and the difference they make to others’ lives is inspiring.  There’s hardly a corner of local life they don’t touch. They work to green our environment, reduce waste and energy use, relieve hunger and poverty, offer friendship to those needing it, improve mental health and use their artistic and sporting talents to enrich our lives, and much more.

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP for Tooting and Cllr Jeremy Ambache, the Mayor of Wandsworth spoke praising the contribution that volunteers and others make and the strength this adds to our community in Balham and Tooting.

Our thanks go to the jazz duo from the group Fuzion Four who provided entertainment, and to the many helpers and organisers who helped make the Award scheme and its celebration on 16th March a success.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our sponsors Islamic Relief, Royal Mahal restaurant and A Plan Insurance, whose generosity made the celebration possible. Without them, it could not have taken place. We also thank Amy Adams for photographing the event.

Awards were presented as follows:

Revd Professor June Boyce Tillman  Champions the environment through music and the arts
The Tooting and Balham Restart Fixing Team Run regular ‘Fixing and mending’ workshops to promote re-use, avoid waste and teach skills
Nicola Pattinson Runs a sewing group for refugees and local women in partnership with local refugee charity CARAS

Rocket Science – Voluntary Sector Needs Analysis – Sign Up for Workshops!

23/03/2023 by Comms Team

Rocket Science is working with Wandsworth Council to understand the needs and aspirations of the local voluntary and community sector. We want to hear from local groups, particularly those usually underrepresented in community forums and events.

We’re inviting representatives from VCS organisations and partners from the Council and public health to join a series of online and in-person workshops centred around five themes. The workshops provide an opportunity to reflect on the relationship with the Council and how best it works with the sector in future.

The events are open to all, however there is an expectation that if you have signed
up for the first session for one theme, you are also able to attend the second
session in the series.
