A new national report argues that Britain’s future will be built through stronger communities, local leadership and trusted relationships. As Wandsworth develops new approaches to neighbourhood health and voluntary sector support, its findings offer timely lessons on why community infrastructure matters.
Community Power, Neighbourhood Health and the Future of Wandsworth
A new report, A Nation of Neighbours: Rebuilding Britain from the Ground Up, argues that the future of Britain will be shaped not only by national policy but by the strength of local communities, relationships and the organisations that bring people together.
Published by UCL Policy Lab, Demos and Lloyds Bank Foundation, the report highlights the importance of community action, local leadership and social infrastructure in tackling some of society’s biggest challenges.
For Wandsworth Care Alliance (WCA), the report reinforces what we see every day: strong communities do not happen by accident. They are built through trust, collaboration, volunteering, local leadership and investment in the organisations that support people and places.
Why Community Infrastructure Matters
The report makes a compelling case that communities need more than services and short-term projects. They need the networks, partnerships, knowledge and support systems that enable organisations to work together and residents to shape the places where they live.
This is the role of community infrastructure.
Infrastructure organisations like WCA help voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations access support, build capacity, collaborate with partners, influence decision-making and amplify community voices. While much of this work happens behind the scenes, it creates the foundations that allow communities to thrive.
What Does This Mean for Wandsworth?
The report arrives at a significant moment for Wandsworth, as local infrastructure organisations, Wandsworth Council and the South West London Integrated Care Board (ICB) continue discussions about the future of voluntary sector infrastructure support across the borough.
At the same time, the NHS is developing neighbourhood health systems through its long-term plans for integrated care. These approaches recognise that improving health and wellbeing requires strong partnerships between health services, councils, communities and the voluntary sector.
WCA is helping to facilitate VCFSE involvement in these developments by bringing organisations together, sharing community insight and ensuring that the experiences of local residents help shape emerging neighbourhood health arrangements.
As both neighbourhood health systems and future infrastructure models evolve, it is essential that local organisations and communities have a strong voice in shaping what comes next.
What It Means for Communities
When community infrastructure is strong, communities benefit through:
- Better collaboration between organisations and public services.
- More opportunities for residents to influence local decisions.
- Stronger neighbourhood connections and reduced isolation.
- Increased access to support, volunteering and community activities.
- Greater resilience and capacity to respond to local challenges.
The report reminds us that social infrastructure – relationships, networks and trusted organisations – is just as important as financial investment. These assets take years to build and play a critical role in creating healthier, more connected and more resilient communities.
